In 2016, my life changed after a spinal cord injury. I had spent most of my adult life working in the construction industry, but suddenly the career I knew was gone. I had to learn how to walk again, return to school, graduate from Sacramento State with honors, and figure out what came next. When I could not find someone willing to give me the opportunity I needed, I created my own.

That is why SOCIAL exists.

SOCIAL Magazine & Media was built to document the people, businesses, athletes, artists, organizations and communities shaping Sacramento. I wanted to create more than social media content that disappears after a few days. I wanted to create photographs, interviews, films and published stories that become part of a person’s permanent record. Some of the people I interview have spent 30, 40 or 50 years building careers, businesses and communities. Their stories deserve to be documented while they are here to tell them in their own words. Athletes deserve to remember the season that changed their lives. Families deserve photographs they can keep. Businesses deserve their history recorded. Sacramento deserves its own archive.

SOCIAL is my second career, but it has also become my life’s work. Building an independent media company while living with a disability requires equipment, travel, production, editing, publishing, printing and countless hours behind every finished story.   • To this point, roughly 95% of the work SOCIAL has done for nonprofits, community organizations, public officials, teams and local causes has been produced without payment. That work has helped us serve our community and tell stories that might otherwise go undocumented, but it is not sustainable. Your support helps turn that mission into a sustainable local media company so I can keep showing up, stay part of the action and continue telling Sacramento’s stories.

  • Your support helps cover the real cost of keeping SOCIAL in the field, including transportation, software, equipment, photography, video, editing, production help and the everyday expenses required to publish the stories we share with the community. What does my support make possible?

    Your support helps me stay in the field, bring in the help I need and preserve important local stories in print, photography, video and digital media so families and communities can experience them for generations. It helps turn today’s stories into tomorrow’s history.

  • Yes. SOCIAL welcomes writers, photographers, videographers, students and community members who want to contribute. When a project is paid, we do our best to pay the people who help make it happen. To this point, paid projects have been limited, so many opportunities have been collaborative or volunteer based. As SOCIAL grows, one of our goals is to create more paid opportunities for the people helping tell these stories.

  • Yes. Businesses can support SOCIAL through general support, sponsorships, advertising or paid services. General support helps fund the mission without influencing editorial coverage, while sponsorships and advertising include defined promotional value for the business.

  • SOCIAL exists because I wanted the opportunity to work, contribute and provide, even when traditional employment was no longer opening doors for me. I created my own path through media, photography and storytelling. Supporting SOCIAL helps turn that path into a sustainable company, creates opportunities for other people to work alongside me, and proves that disability does not have to mean being left on the sidelines. It means being part of the action, building something meaningful and contributing to the community.
